We will continue our article series about the most important thing we have at Binero – our customers. This time we want to highlight one of our operating staffs favourite websites, geoguessr.com. The website has Amazons’ servers but still got their domain name registered through Binero and our name servers are also used.
Tell us more about yourself
My name is Anton and have always been interested in the web and its possibilities. I have a engineering education and have always worked in IT and webb in one way or another. Right now we are six people working with GeoGuessr, we all have different interests, specializations and tasks.
Tell us shortly about your website
You could call GeoGuessr a geographic discovery where you as a player will be placed in a randomly picked place in Google Street View. From the leads you get you will try to figure out where you have been placed. The leads and places is picked from Google Street View and nothing we have created ourselves, which means that the players can be place pretty much any where and it’s up to them to figure our where.
Where did you get the idea to your website?Â
It started as an idea to place users at randomly picked locations in Google Street View, without telling them where they where or reveal clues such as street names. The though was to take away prejudices that can occur for different geographic places and from that be able to explore places with an open mind. From this it evolved in to more of a game an challenge to be able to figure out where you have been placed. As the game has evolved and gotten more and more users we have added more functions, such as time-bound, more maps, challenges between players and more.
Why did you choose to have your website at Binero? We also want to know why you chose to move it to Amazon but keep the DNS- and e-mail services at Binero?
Binero has a simple way to handle DNS’s, e-mail and more that suits us good. Your support has always been helpful with fast replies, both thru e-mail and telephone. There is a lot of reasons that we moved it to AppHarbor (Amazon) but the biggest one was that they offer a very easy way to scale their server capacity according to how much pressure there is on the site. Which suited us good when we time to time can have more than 4.000 visitors at the same time.
How is your website built?Â
What are your suggestions to the ones that have or are thinking about creating a website at Binero?
Start by testing in a small scale. Everything doesn’t need to be perfect in the beginning and it’s better to get your working idea up and running than a perfectly thought thru website.
We would like to thank GeoGuessr for this interview and we hope that it has inspired you to believe in your ideas!
Are you in the mood to explore new places? Go to geoguessr.com and good luck finding out where you are!
